2005 winter Texas Diary (1) a -10℃ but warm small town

p>This is the third year in a row that I visit Ross at Texas, and I really love Lubbbock. Not only the laid-back style of life, but also the people there. Without all the friends there, I think Ross will not have such a colorful life as he has now. So, even we had a freezing cold front when I was there, my heart is full of warm feelings from friends.
I want to dedicate this series of journals to all the friends I know when I visited Texas during these years, including the friends like Sophie, Andy, Dr. Wu, Carol, Elsa, and Karla who are not in the pictures. Thank you so much to let me have those wonderful memories.

This is me!! It's the first time I've ever been in such cold weather like this, so I covered myself with thick, winter clothes all over but eyes. Dr. Smith, Ross's advisor, was joking at me said that I must be the one who brings the cold front in. And it is probably true cause Lubbock got warmer again right after I left. The building in the background is where the GIS lab is located. This is the place I spent most of the time, not including home.
.

This is Ross, the main reason of my visit. He just passed his qualify exam and is now a PhD Candidate!!!

.

Dana is a beautiful girl from Romania. She just got her PhD degree this August. We spent quite a bit of time together this time. She is a very passionate, cute, and intimate girl. It is a pitty I didn't get some pictures while she was dancing. I believe she will find a job she wants in the US before next Spring.

.

Joydeep is from India, goes by JoJo. He also got his PhD degree this August specialized in plant. He is my Chai tea teacher. He is good at Racquetball. A really friendly guy and I like him very much. Wish he can get a good job in the US next year too. For sure he will be an excellent teacher.
.

Louise, a girl from Wisconsin, is in the same project with Ross but in different department. She is a sincere person who always gives without taking. She is always patient with our poor English and is one of the few Americans that can be very close as good friends. Without her help, Ross's field work can't be done smoothly. I wish she can graduate on time and keep going on her PhD journey.

This is Lynn, father of Ross's underground host family. But don't be fool by his giant appearance, instead, he is a very careful and super sensitive person!!. He is always the one who cries first in the party :p. Lynn and his wife, Marion, are both very enthusiastic and care about people. Although busying with their jobs, they always do whatever they can to help people, such as fixing cars and holding parties.
.

This is Ross's underground mom, Marion. The feeling she gives to me is not only like a mom, but also like a hen that leads a group of chicks and gets everybody together. She and Lynn take care of these international students just like their own kids!! They try all different ways to get everybody together and have them feel like home. I really really love her and admire her.

I had many wonderful experients in this trip. Even with my poor English, I can really feel that there are no boundary in the careness and wholeheartedness . When I am very close to one's heart, language is not a problem anymore. With just limited vocabulary plus body language and facial expressions, people can still understand each other. At the beginning, I can't undertand what Marion said and need others to help me out on some words to express myself. But there were some moments, I felt like I can totally understand what Marion said!! JoJo and me both sensed that sometimes he can understand my Mandarin. I don't know how to describe this marvellous feeling, but it's really wonderful.

I've come back to Taiwan 3 days already with full of touching feelings in my luggage, but half of my heart is still staying in Lubbock and can't not back to my origal track. Sometimes I am wondering, why people in Lubbock can create such a warm feeling, but I seldom have that feeling even though having lots of friends in Taiwan? Both of them are very busy!! Maybe that's because in the place far away from home with simpler life, the relationship between friends are more important and people are willing to spend more time to care about other people and make friends. Here at Taiwan, I think I will try harder to make it happens....

Thank you!! My friends in Lubbock. Thanks for the precious gift -love. No matter how far the distance we are away from each other, you are always in my mind :)
